Heart Health Is Largely Preventable—Here’s How to Start

Heart disease has been the leading cause of death for men and women worldwide for more than ten years. The surprising part? Roughly 80% of heart-related deaths are preventable.

Heart disease includes blocked or narrowed blood vessels, heart rhythm issues, and weakened heart muscle. While those diagnoses sound overwhelming, the reality is hopeful: many forms of heart disease can be prevented, or even improved, with simple lifestyle changes.

Nutrition plays a major role, but exercise is one of the most powerful tools for heart health, especially when done safely and consistently.

If you’re just getting started, here are a few simple guidelines:

• Start small. Even a 10-minute walk is a step in the right direction.
• Move your heart. Any activity that gently raises your heart rate helps – walking, cycling, swimming, or strength training.
• Warm up and cool down. Gradually ease into and out of exercise to avoid dizziness and support recovery.
• Watch intensity. If you can talk while moving, you’re in a heart-healthy zone.
• Choose movement you enjoy. The best program is the one you’ll stick with.

Whether your goal is prevention, reversing risk factors, or simply feeling better day to day, there’s no better time to start than now. Your heart responds quickly to the right kind of movement and consistency makes all the difference.
